Poem: From Despair…

I have entered my second poem contest called ‘Sydney Youth Writing Competition‘. There is only one primary rule. You need to include one of these words: Light, Fly or Creek.

Last year I entered a poem called ‘In the Ocean’s arms‘  and although it was only my first writing competition, I won my age group which was one of the highlights of the year for me.

This time I have moved up an age group, so I don’t expect to win, but you have to be in it to win it!

Darkness fills my days
The darkness, aching sadness
It smothers all my hope
As it conquers my dearest dreams

The world is black in sorrow
And white in countless lies
Does darkness cloud the earth
Or just my cold, closed mind?

My friend came to me
Like an angel in a storm
Without hope, words are meaningless
Still drowning in despair

The world stayed black in sorrow
All the colours left my life
How come I see shadows
Where others see only light?

But then she spoke of the sick and homeless
People and children needlessly dying
She opened up my eyes
To how lucky I seemed to be

Now my eyes are open
I see the world in all its wonders
The bright lights and the endless laughter
I now embrace a worthier way to fill my days
